Bolt’s Competitive Edge in Egypt: A 50% Discount Strategy to Rival Uber and inDrive

Bolt, the prominent ride-hailing service, has made a strategic entry into Cairo, Egypt, intensifying the competition with established players like Uber and inDrive. In a move that underscores its commitment to the African market, Bolt has introduced an aggressive customer acquisition strategy by offering a 50% discount to riders for a six-month period, a cost absorbed entirely by the company. This initiative is expected to significantly boost Bolt’s market share and attract a large customer base.

The company’s expansion into Egypt is part of a broader investment plan, with Bolt committing a substantial €500 million ($542.8 million) to its African operations. This investment aims to not only expand Bolt’s presence across the continent but also to create substantial employment opportunities, with a target of over 300,000 new drivers.

In a departure from the industry standard, Bolt has decided to waive the usual 15% commission fee for drivers in Cairo. This bold step ensures that drivers retain the full earnings from their trips, positioning Bolt as an attractive platform for drivers seeking better income opportunities.

Haitham Mansour, Bolt Egypt’s Country Manager, emphasized that competitive pricing is central to Bolt’s strategy to stimulate demand. By undercutting commissions relative to competitors, Bolt aims to incentivize drivers and offer customers more affordable service fees.

Bolt’s foray into Egypt marks its 15th market in Africa since its launch in South Africa in 2016. The company has steadily expanded its operations across the continent, establishing a presence in countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Cameroon, Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda.

With the latest launch in Egypt, Bolt is set to challenge the existing ride-hailing services provided by Uber, inDrive, Careem, and DiDi. The company’s strategy of waiving driver commissions for an extended period has already been implemented in other markets such as Harare, Zimbabwe, and Gaborone, Botswana, demonstrating Bolt’s commitment to maintaining high demand through competitive pricing.

Bolt’s 50% discount offer for riders in Egypt is a calculated move to disrupt the market and position itself as a leading service provider. By aligning driver benefits with customer incentives, Bolt is poised to make a significant impact on the ride-hailing landscape in Egypt and beyond.
